Scent Name:  Elaine

Manufacturer: Possets Perfume – Dreams of Avalon

Scent Description and Notes: “Little known but pivotal figure in lives of Lancelot and Guinevere, Elaine was a damsel in distress. Enchanted and forced to live in boiling water until rescued by Lancelot, she managed to seduce him afterwards. A child was the result of that union which enraged Guinevere and set the entire Round Table on a new path. That child was Galahad, the perfect knight.

Elaine is spicy, close and comforting but not foody. Womanly and warm thanks to a tonka infusion which lends a honey’ed aspect to play off the spice.” –http://www.dreamsofavalon.com/catalog.php?category=40

Oil Color: A light white wine color.

Bottle Design and Artwork: This is a standard 5ml imp size with a clear cap and tester.  The label is simply a white label with both the name of the scent and the company name hand-written on either side.

Sweet cream, delicate orange petals, white carnation, warm vanilla, spring violet, powder accord and iris-infused blankets wrapped around an ancient piece of cedarwood enchanted with Irish moss, white sandalwood, Hawthorn sprigs, and dusty elderberries. ” –https://scentbase.com/scents/Violette-Market/Fairy-Changeling/201105241612259433

  • Dry:  It’s still spicy and floral – alluring and enchanting.  I still can pick out the cream, carnation, sandalwood, vanilla, dust, and a little wood.

black tea, Possets Perfume, tea

Scent Name:  Black Tea

Manufacturer: Possets Perfume

Scent Description and Notes: “The most dark and the most tannic of teas. Somehow that puckery quality becomes addictive and I  have to call this blend “narcotic” after all. Just right for a seductive night deep in July or August where humidity makes itself into a sexy accessory. Not subtle but very alluring. This is just the straight tea as made by me, not a tea with accouterments  Pure and beautiful, incense floats over it all and the effect is so much like the vapor lines of a mirage. Tealike but non foody (not sweet).” –http://possets.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=585

Oil Color: A lightly steeped black tea.

Bottle Design and Artwork: This is a standard 5ml imp size with a clear cap and tester.  The label is simply a white label with both the name of the scent and the company name hand-written on either side.

Scent:

  • ITI:  It smells like fragrant black tea with honey and lemon.
  • Wet: The honey and lemon are stronger here, followed by a more floral black tea.
  • Dry: It’s gone really floral in a tea way, just a touch of smoke, and lots of honey (that doesn’t go all icky on me) and lemon.  It’s interesting and reminds me a bit of sweet tea.

Other Impressions: None.

cream, milk, Possets Perfume

Scent Name:  Cream

Manufacturer: Possets Perfume

Scent Description and Notes: “Why settle for simple milk when you can have cream in all its glory? Thick and rich, light yellow and smooth. This adds a milky layer to any of the teas in our line. Again you can wear this one alone if you like and it is a blend of several different ingredients, all of them offering a beautiful facet of the thought of cream which you may not have considered. Lucious.” –http://possets.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=583

Oil Color: A white wine color.

Bottle Design and Artwork: This is a standard 5ml imp size with a clear cap and tester.  The label is simply a white label with both the name of the scent and the company name hand-written on either side.

Scent:

  • ITI:  Cream and buttermilk.  It smells like it would taste great on pancakes.
  • Wet: It’s more buttermilk than cream now.  And there’s a slight hint of lemon.
  • Dry: Yep, still buttermilk and a bit of lemon.  It has curdled a bit with age, I think.  I remember this being much, much sweeter when I received this several years ago.

Other Impressions: None.

A Holiday Pastiche, baked buns, bread, candle, cardamom, Conjure Oils, limited edition, lingonberry, orange glaze

Scent Name:  Saint Lucia

Manufacturer: Conjure Oils – A Holiday Pastiche (Limited Edition)

Scent Description and Notes: “Observed on December 13 in Scandinavian countries, it is the Feast Day of Saint Lucia, whose name means “light”.This is represented in the yearly tradition of choosing one lucky little girl to wear a flowing white gown, don a glowing candle-studded crown and lead a line of candle bearing maidens trailing behind her to represent Saint Lucia overcoming the darkness of her blindness. The Saint is often portrayed holding a golden plate containing her own eyes that some say were plucked out by enemies, yet other sources claim that she gouged them out herself. It is of no surprise then that she is venerated at the darkest time of the year

An illuminating blend offering the sweet scent of lucia yeast buns baked with cardamom and saffron then slowly drizzled with sweet orange glaze rounded out with just a hint of lingonberry twigs from the candle wreath warmed by the candle’s steady glow.” -Scent Base and http://www.conjureoils.com/feri_oils.htm

Oil Color: A deeply resinous brown – almost a pitched black.

Bottle Design and Artwork: This is a standard vial / imp size (1/32 oz). The imp has a parchment-colored label that features the name of the company, its slogan, and the website in black.  The side displays the  collection information while the front contains the scent name.  Ann text is surrounded by a floral bust slightly Asiatic border.

Scent:

  • ITI: Oh gosh, so foody!  I get sweet Hawaiian buns with orange glaze.  It actually makes me hungry.
  • Wet: The orange is much stronger, but it’s orange infused with cardamom, followed by sweet bread and berry scented candles.
  • Dry: The candle, lingonberry, and something that reminds me a bit of a Christmas green scent are most dominant, followed by light bread, cardamom, and orange glaze.  I’ve grown to like this one!

alderhydes, almond milk, Amber, milk, Perfumerie Generale, sandalwood, Tonka, tonka bean, vanilla

Scent Name:  Tonkamande

Manufacturer:  Perfumerie Generale

Scent Description and Notes: “Creamy, comforting almond milk is whipped into airy perfection with fizzy aldehydes until it is as dreamy and weightless as the foam on a cappuccino, but with a hint of marzipan. There is bread baking, not in an overwhelming way, but as if the oven is in the next room and you get just the occasional whiff of wheat and yeast. There is warm, gentle vanilla – as delicate and delectable as a bite of flaky pastry melting on your tongue. Imagine a late morning breakfast in the coziest café in the world – a place where they treat you like family and bring you cake batter to sample while you linger over your coffee. Then take all of those lovely, comforting scents, blend in a bit of soft, soothing powder and inject the magical concoction with the bubbly lightness of dry champagne. Then you will have Tonkamande – a fragrance that embodies contentment. We can’t imagine a nicer way to start the day.

Almond milk, aldehydes, tonka bean, wheat, sandalwood, vanilla, amber.” –http://www.luckyscent.com/shop/detail.asp?itemid=34540

Oil Color: Clear.

Bottle Design and Artwork: This is a standard vial / imp size (1/32 oz). The decant simply features a small label printed in the company and scent names.

Scent:

  • ITI:  I was expecting something much softer, but I suppose the reason for the heavy perfume-y quality of this scent is the alderhydes.  I can tease out some vanilla, but it gives me a headache when sniffing deeply.
  • Wet: Very strong alderhydes, vanilla,  like Vanilla Fields, and a hint of almond milk and amber.  I would like this much better without the alderhydes.
  • Dry: The alderhydes have settled down some so that the vanilla and amber are more discernible.  There is a hint of tonka, but I was hoping for more.

Other Impressions: None.

Before looking at the scent description, the word “tropical” worries me because I imagine the scent will be just too sweet and overripe.

Manufacturer: Solstice Scents –  Summer 2012

Scent Description and Notes: “Coconut, Tuberose, Tahitian Gardenia, Lime Essential Oil & Pink Lotus Attar.” -Solstice Scents

Scent:

  • ITI:  I get pink lotus and gardenia.  It is tropical, not in the overripe way that I had anticipated.  It’s rather floral and intoxicating.
  • Wet: Gardenia, plastic (?), and lotus with a hint of coconut.  I’m not sure where the plastic note is coming from, but it’s really odd.
  • Dry: I still get plastic, then coconut meat, then gardenia and lotus.  If it weren’t for the plastic I’m getting, I’d really like this scent.

Other Impressions: “I like it.  It’s like cinnamon and butter.” -Tony

BPAL, Frankenstein, gunpowder tea, Lavender, Lilac, limited edition, saffron, tea, violet, violet leaf, yule, yule 2011

Wohoo, I found another imp as I was cleaning up the house.  It’s a tester, but that’s good enough for my purposes.

Scent Name:  Insupportable Misery

Manufacturer: Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab –  Yule Frankenstein subseries 2011

Scent Description and Notes: ““Cursed, cursed creator! Why did I live? Why, in that instant, did I not extinguish the spark of existence which you had so wantonly bestowed? I know not; despair had not yet taken possession of me; my feelings were those of rage and revenge. I could with pleasure have destroyed the cottage and its inhabitants and have glutted myself with their shrieks and misery. “When night came I quitted my retreat and wandered in the wood; and now, no longer restrained by the fear of discovery, I gave vent to my anguish in fearful howlings. I was like a wild beast that had broken the toils, destroying the objects that obstructed me and ranging through the wood with a staglike swiftness. Oh! What a miserable night I passed! The cold stars shone in mockery, and the bare trees waved their branches above me; now and then the sweet voice of a bird burst forth amidst the universal stillness. All, save I, were at rest or in enjoyment; I, like the arch-fiend, bore a hell within me, and finding myself unsympathized with, wished to tear up the trees, spread havoc and destruction around me, and then to have sat down and enjoyed the ruin. “But this was a luxury of sensation that could not endure; I became fatigued with excess of bodily exertion and sank on the damp grass in the sick impotence of despair. There was none among the myriads of men that existed who would pity or assist me; and should I feel kindness towards my enemies? No; from that moment I declared everlasting war against the species, and more than all, against him who had formed me and sent me forth to this insupportable misery.

Insupportable misery: violet leaf, saffron, gunpowder tea, bruised lilac, and despairing lavender.” -BPAL

Oil Color: A yellowed barley color.

Bottle Design and Artwork: This is a standard vial / imp size (1/32 oz). This is a decant from ralenth.  It features a small label with the scent name in red block font.

Scent:

  • ITI:  Gunpowder tea (spicy and peppery), lavender, and soapy lilac.
  • Wet: Light lavender, saffron, violet leaf, and faint gunpowder tea.  It’s a reflective blend.
  • Dry: It’s light, airy, and warm now that the lavender and tea have mellowed to let the saffron shine.

Other Impressions: None.

Scent Description and Notes: “Before my bed
There is bright-lit moonlight
So that it seems
Like frost on the ground:

Lifting my head
I watch the bright moon
Lowering my head
I dream that I’m home.

When the moon is full, mankind is one. Bamboo pulp and oude with green and white tea.
“ – BPAL

Oil Color: – I cannot tell the color of the oil by looking into the blue apothecary bottle.

  • ITB: Strong bamboo pulp, floral teas, and a slightly resinous oude.
  • Wet: Strong tea, oude, and that a green bamboo pulp.  It’s interesting, but I’m not sure how well I like it yet.

Luna herself governs glamours, bewitchments and dream-work, innocent wonder, transient pleasure and delight, the Moment, impulse, mystery and veils. The Blue Moon is one of her rarest manifestations, and this scent is formulated to encapsulate her most complex and profound nature:

Mugwort, for psychic sensitivity…

Frankincense and hyssop for complexity, wisdom and noscere…

… with a potent lunar-charged, oneirongenic blend of blue musk, exquisite woods, moonflower, evening stock, Madagascan ylang ylang, Florentine iris, Greek cypress, green tea absolute, palmarosa, cucumber, rose milkweed, Clary sage, lavender, lemon balm, and passion fruit.“ – BPAL

Scent Name: Moon of Horses

Manufacturer:  Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab –  A Little Lunacy 2011

Scent Description and Notes: “One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter.

And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,

Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates.

And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.

And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them.

And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone.

By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.

For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.

Grape vines, cinnamon, frankincense, olive leaf, red wine, saffron, stacte, galbanum, costus root, smoke, and brimstone.“ – BPAL

Oil Color: – I cannot tell the color of the oil by looking into the brown apothecary bottle.

Bottle Design and Artwork:  This is a 5ml standard brown apothecary bottle.  The label extends just under halfway around the bottom.  The label features the name of the company along the bottom in thin, white block font.  The name of the collection is in similar but smaller font along the top.  The scent name is a pinked red block font just above the company name.  The image is the Grim Reaper on his horse, which is mostly black, but outlined in red.

Scent:

  • ITB:  I liked the idea of this one before I realized wine and me were not good matches.  I get red wine and smoke.
  • Wet:  More red wine, olive leaf, a touch of saffron, and brimstone.  It still has a bit too much red wine for my taste.
  • Dry: Once dry, the wine settles down to let the notes emerge: smoke, frankincense, brimstone, grape vines, galbanum, and stacte.  It’s much more appealing in this state.

Scent Name: Wolf Moon

Manufacturer:  Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab –  A Little Lunacy 2011

Scent Description and Notes: “This pale and glittering moon hangs high over the deep snows and freezing winds of midwinter. January’s full moon has been named the Wolf Moon by many cultures, as the nights are filled with the howls of ravenous Wolf packs, and the danger of falling prey to the animal’s desperate hunger is at its peak.

This scent is that of unending, unquenchable hunger and feral madness. This is the dead of winter: a frozen night, chill wind, and the sharp, warm perfume of blood, fur, fang, and claw. Winter air, Terebinth pine, black spruce, long-dead maple leaves, juniper berry, dusty orris, deep amber, white sandalwood, brown musk, blue cedar, ambrette seed, benzoin, and tonka.“ – BPAL

Bottle Design and Artwork:  This is a 5ml standard brown apothecary bottle.  The label extends just under halfway around the bottom.  The label features the name of the company along the bottom in thick, white block font.  The name of the collection is in similar but smaller font along the top.  The scent name is in a yellow Calligraphy-type font just above the company name.  The image is of a werewolf seemingly changing under the full moon.

Scent:

  • ITB:  It reminds me a little of spice drops, but it has a warmth to it from the amber and the musk.
  • Wet:  Spruce, pine, juniper – all of the dark green scents I adore.  I get impressions of cool winter air, musk, and a bit of amber, but it is gorgeous just the way it is – intensely green and slightly spooky.
  • Dry:  It’s more resinous once dried with the benzoin, ambrette seed, brown musk, which pairs beautifully with the much sedated green of the pine and juniper.
Other Impressions: None.
