Scent Name: A Hailstorm of Knitting-Needles

Manufacturer:  Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab –  Yule 2017: An Evening with the Spirits

Scent Description and Notes: ““At a late period in the evening, after nearly three hours of experiment, Mrs Hayden having risen, and talking at another table while taking refreshment, a child suddenly called out, ‘Will all the spirits who have been here this evening rap together?’ The words were no sooner uttered than a hailstorm of knitting-needles was heard, crowded into certainly less than two seconds; the big needle sounds of the men, and the little ones of the women and children, being clearly distinguishable, but perfectly disorderly in their arrival.”

– Augustus de Morgan

Polished mahogany and black tea with a clatter of vanilla husk and oak wood.”  -https://blackphoenixalchemylab.com/shop/limited-edition/yule-2017/a-hailstorm-of-knitting-needles/

Oil Color: Colorless.

  • ITI:  Sweet, creamy vanilla pods steeped in fragrant black tea infuses the woods with an air repose and comfort, as if reclining in a lovely Victorian home while waiting of tea and some delicious treat to appear.
  • Wet: I was anticipating that the mahogany would amp once applied, but I’m surprised to find the oak being the dominant note once on my skin. The black tea dances just underneath that, gently pulling a hint of vanilla husk with it while the tones of wood polish and mahogany add a crispness that reminds me of juniper in a way. That final aspect builds and reorders itself until mahogany and wood polish are more discernible than the vanilla and oak.
  • Dry: After 8 hours, much of the subtitles of the scent have dissipated, although I still can tease out the vanilla with a hint of vague wood. I do wish it had lasted a bit longer, but this is an altogether pleasant scent that I could see working any time of year.
Other Impressions: None.

Scent Name: Odic Force

Manufacturer:  Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab –  Yule 2017: An Evening with the Spirits

Scent Description and Notes: “The desire to inflict a mortal wound on the monster, Superstition, which, from a similar origin, a few centuries ago, inflicted on European society so vast an amount of misery, and by whose influence not hundreds, but thousands, of innocent persons died in tortures, on the rack and at the stake; — the desire made me wish to make the experiment, if possible, of bringing a highly sensitive person, by night, to a churchyard. I thought it possible that they might see, over graves where mouldering bodies lay, something like that which Billing had seen.

  • ITI:  It smells like lime Hi-Chew candies!  The lime is bright and effervescent, the amber sweet while the mint and eucalyptus add a sense of coolness, like the chill that comes over you when entering a dark. slightly creepy room in the middle of the night.
  • Wet: It reminds me of fresh lime gelato garnished with mint.  No eucalypti or amber yet, but I’d be thrilled to pieces if this scent doesn’t change. Yet as I type, the scent begins to shift, taking on a more powder tone from the amber that softens the crisp sharpness of the lime.
  • Dry: Wow, that does shift.  The powdery green amber wraps around the lime, diffusing its acidity and fruitiness, leaving me instead with the sweetness of faint lime candy infused with a hint of faded mint.
Other Impressions: “It’s like car air freshener and cider.” -Tony

Amber, Ambergris, An Evening with the Spirits, BPAL, Lavender, limited edition, yule, Yule 2017, Yule: An Evening with the Spirits, Yules, Yules 2017

Scent Name:  The Air and the Ether

Manufacturer:  Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab –  Yule 2017: An Evening with the Spirits

Scent Description and Notes: “But on what could an impression be left? An impression of such a nature becomes a material thing and implies a material nexus, however subtle. So far as we know there are only two things there, the air and the ether. The air is a mobile thing and could not carry a permanent impression. But is the ether a mobile thing? It is pictured as a most delicate medium with vibrating currents flowing in it, but it seems to me that a most tenuous jelly with quivers and thrills would be a closer analogy. We could conceive the whole material universe embedded in and interpenetrated by this subtle material, which would not necessarily change its position since it is too fine for wind or any coarser material to influence it. I feel that I am rushing in where even Lodges fear to tread, but if it should prove to be as I suggest then we should have that permanent screen on which shadows are thrown. The block of ether upon the stairs is the same that it always was, and so conveys the impression from the past.

– the Edge of the Unknown, Arthur Conan Doyle

Gentle, almost imperceptible, permeating all things: pale amber vibrating with ambergris and a thread of lavender.”  -https://blackphoenixalchemylab.com/shop/limited-edition/yule-2017/the-air-and-the-ether/

  • ITI:  Well, hello there, French lavender and ambergris. My, don’t we make an enticing yet soothing pair!
  • Wet:  Gosh, the lavender really is a beautiful note in this blend, so much so that I don’t mind it overshadowing the amber or ambergris, which lend the lavender note a bit of warmth, but don’t stand out individually.  I do hope those develop a bit.
  • Dry: Wow, this is lovely!  A gorgeously golden amber wraps itself around the lavender, keeping the herbal note soft and ephemeral, while the ambergris buoys up both notes in a hammock of musky bliss.  Yes, I will have a bottle of this.
Other Impressions: “Okay, maybe it’s because I was chopping veggies, but it smells like orange, lemongrass, and some other leafy green I’m not sure about.  Actually, it smells like lavender plant, not lavender flower, which isn’t a bad thing because I like the way the plant itself smells.” -Tony

Scent Description and Notes: “Fear of Religious Services.

Sour wine drying on an ancient ciborium, crumbling pages of a yellowed sacramentary, blinding glints of bitter white sunlight shattering off a tarnished monstrance, and doleful voices droning through a haze of oppressive, smothering incense.”  -https://blackphoenixalchemylab.com/shop/limited-edition/yule-2017/krikophobia/

Scent:

  • ITI:  Dang it, wine!  I get sour wine splashed against mental with a touch of incense wafting around it.  It’s not the worse wine scent I’ve smelled, but wine is not the greatest note on my skin.
  • Wet: Ugh, super sour wine with resin and a touch of tarnish.  Not great, honestly.
  • Dry:  The wine settles much better than anticipated, I think tempered by the book or paper note, which allows the resin to shine a little bit more from underneath wine’s presence than when wet.I’m not getting any tarnished metal notes, but I think I am okay with that.
Other Impressions: “It’s like you have violet candy and Dimetapp on your wrist.” -Tony

An Evening with the Spirits, black tea, bois de rose, BPAL, dried pink roses, dried rose, Lilac, limited edition, redwood, Rose, tea, white lilac, wood, yule, Yule 2017, Yule: An Evening with the Spirits

Scent Name:  Spirit Board

Manufacturer:  Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab –  Yule 2017: An Evening with the Spirits

Scent Description and Notes:  “CRAZED THROUGH “OUIJA”
Neglected by Her Lover She Seeks Comfort of a Fortune-Telling Device

BRIDGEPORT, Conn., Nov. 20.— Mrs. Eugenia Carpenter, a young woman living at 221 Myrtle, av., has been receiving attention from a young man who very recently ceased to call upon her.

Mrs. Carpenter bought a fortune-telling board called “ouija,” and from it received the prediction that her suitor would not return to her.

Last night she was found wandering almost nude in the streets.

Her reason was gone and at intervals she cried out “Ouija said so and I knew it was true.”

Image from https://blackphoenixalchemylab.com/shop/limited-edition/yule-2017/spirit-board-2017/

Scent:

  • ITI:  Woo, okay, that’s some intense florals right now, but very much what I imagine Victorian houses would smell like.  The lilac is the most dominant floral in the bottle, followed by a more subtle bois de rose and light redwood.
  • Wet: The lilac is sweeter on my skin as the dried rose lifts it up, both of which are rounded out by the black tea (a lovely steeped note), bois de rose, and rosewood.  It’s rather strong, however, and definitely a statement floral.
  • Dry:  After 4 hours, I’m left with rosewood, light lilac, and a hint of dried petals.  It’s certainly a more sophisticated floral, but it does have a bit more throw and presence in all stages than I’d like.  I think that this would be something I would choose if I were going to the theater or to an opera.
Other Impressions: None.

Ambergris, BPAL, coriander, cumin, Frankincense, gold, grape, limited edition, myrrh, vanilla, vanilla bean, white grape, white wine, white wine grape, wine, yule, Yule 2017

Scent Name:

Manufacturer:  Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab –  Yule 2017

Scent Description and Notes: “Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.

And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,

And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.

Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, inquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.

And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.

When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:

And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,

In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child’s life.

And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.

But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:

And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

An offering of frankincense, gold, and myrrh, with coriander, cumin, ambergris, white wine grape, and vanilla bean.

Now as at all times I can see in the mind’s eye,
In their stiff, painted clothes, the pale unsatisfied ones
Appear and disappear in the blue depth of the sky
With all their ancient faces like rain-beaten stones,
And all their helms of silver hovering side by side,
And all their eyes still fixed, hoping to find once more,
Being by Calvary’s turbulence unsatisfied,
The uncontrollable mystery on the bestial floor“ -https://blackphoenixalchemylab.com/shop/limited-edition/yule-2017/the-magi-2/

Oil Color: The color of whisky, but clear on my skin.

Bottle Design and Artwork:  This is a decanted imp.  It features the collection name and notes on the back of the label and a copy of the label art on front:

YULE-2017-LABEL-the-magi-600x473

Image from https://blackphoenixalchemylab.com/shop/limited-edition/yule-2017/the-magi-2/

  • ITI:  I was expecting resins on first sniff, but instead, I get grape soda, almost Manischewitz in sweetness.  When I try to tease out more, I can pick up the coriander, gold, and the fuzzy familiarity of cumin.
  • Wet: It’s nearly the same on my skin, although the gold is a little rounder.  It’s certainly not bad, but the scent is unexpected.
  • Dry:  The sweetness of the grape has mellowed considerably after 6 hours, allowing the vanilla bean and ambergris to  thrive, supported by a dash of cumin and resin.  I like this a great deal more when dried, but I can’t help but feel like a tween again, complete with grape Lipsmakers when the scent is wet.
Other Impressions: None.

Scent Name:  The Governing Dark’s Begun

Manufacturer:  Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab –  Yule 2017

Scent Description and Notes: ”

It freezes – all across a soundless sky
The birds go home. The governing dark’s begun:
The steadfast dark that waits not for a sun;
The ultimate dark wherein the race shall die.

Death, with his evil finger to his lip,
Leers in at human windows, turning spy
To learn the country where his rule shall lie
When he assumes perpetual generalship.

The undefeated enemy, the chill
That shall benumb the voiceful earth at last,
Is master of our moment, and has bound
The viewless wind it-self. There is no sound.
It freezes. Every friendly stream is fast.
It freezes; and the graven twigs are still.

– Hilaire Belloc

Scent:

  • ITI:  Gorgeously resinous.  It actually reminds me of a shop called Rare Earth in Ashland, OR that sells a whole host of delicious incenses. The gum Arabic with the juniper and agarwood provide a lovely green, aromatic woodsy base for the  opoponax and faint myrrh.
  • Wet: The opoponax and agarwood are stronger on my skin than in the imp, making the scent seem more fragile woodsy, like balsam and long burned out incense.  While it settles, the frankincense emerges just behind a thin veil of juniper.  So far, so good!
  • Dry:  After 12 hours, the scent is a very soft combination of faded chocolate and resins.  I wish the juniper stayed longer on my skin, but the dried down version is pleasant. Overall, I’m pleased with its staying power.
Other Impressions: None.

Scent Name:  Thirteen (13)

Manufacturer:  Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab –  October 2017

Scent Description and Notes: “13 is significant, whether you consider it lucky, unlucky or just plain odd. Many believe it to be unfortunate…

…because there were 13 present at the Last Supper.
…Loki crashed a party of 12 at Valhalla, which ended in Baldur’s death.
…Oinomaos killed 13 of Hippodamia’s suitors before Pelops finally, in his own shady way, defeated the jealous king.
…In ancient Rome, Hecate’s witches gathered in groups of 12, the Goddess herself being the 13th in the coven.

Concern over the number thirteen echoes back beyond the Christian era. Line 13 was omitted form the Code of Hammurabi.

The shivers over Friday the 13th also have some interesting origins:

…Christ was allegedly crucified on Friday the 13th.
…On Friday, October 13, 1307, King Philip IV of France ordered the arrests of Jaques de Molay, Grand Master of the Knights Templar, and sixty of his senior knights.
…In British custom, hangings were held on Fridays, and there were 13 steps on the gallows leading to the noose.

To combat the superstition, Robert Ingersoll and the Thirteen Club held thirteen-men dinners during the 19th Century. Successful? Hardly. The number still invokes trepidation to this day. A recent whimsical little serial killer study showed that the following murderers all have names that total thirteen letters:

Theodore Bundy
Jeffrey Dahmer
Albert De Salvo
John Wayne Gacy

And, with a little stretch of the imagination, you can also fit “Jack the Ripper” and “Charles Manson” into that equation.

More current-era paranoia: modern schoolchildren stop their memorization of the multiplication tables at 12. There were 13 Plutonium slugs in the atomic bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki. Apollo 13 wasn’t exactly the most successful space mission. All of these are things that modern triskaidekaphobes point to when justifying their fears.

For some, 13 is an extremely fortuitous and auspicious number…

…In Jewish tradition, God has 13 Attributes of Mercy. Also, there were 13 tribes of Israel, 13 principles of Jewish faith, and 13 is considered the age of maturity.
…The ancient Egyptians believed that there were 12 stages of spiritual achievement in this lifetime, and a 13th beyond death.
…The word for thirteen, in Chinese, sounds much like the word which means “must be alive”.

Thirteen, whether you love it or loathe it, is a pretty cool number all around.

…In some theories of relativity, there are 13 dimensions.
…It is a prime number, lucky number, star number, Wilson Prime, and Fibonacci number.
…There are 13 Archimedean solids.

AND…
…There were 13 original colonies when the United States were founded.

Says a lot about the US, doesn’t it?

During this distinctly ill-omened time, we’ve constructed a scent comprised of thirteen comforting, soothing notes, including three chocolates, coffee husk, molasses, smoked sugar cane, rum absolute, almond, cozy cardamom, black sage, coconut meat, red benzoin, and bourbon vanilla pod.“ -https://blackphoenixalchemylab.com/shop/in-memoriam/13-2017/

Oil Color: A light barley color.

Bottle Design and Artwork:  This is a decanted imp.  It features the collection name and notes on the back of the label and a copy of the label art on front.

13-october-2017-web-587x600

Image from https://blackphoenixalchemylab.com/shop/in-memoriam/13-2017/

Scent:

  • ITI:  Milk chocolate, globs of sugar, a healthy dash of cardamom, and a touch of rum absolute drizzled over almond  and coffee make this scent almost good enough to eat. While I’m not getting any of the bourbon vanilla, coconut, sage, or benzoin, I think the notes that I’ve been able to detect stand well together.
  • Wet:  The red benzoin blooms on my skin after the chocolate and coffee, followed by coconut meat, bourbon, and rum absolute.  It’s a little less sweet on my skin, although still very much a foody scent.
  • Dry:  After 12 hours, the scent is still very much present, although it’s a much softer blend of chocolate, coconut meat, vanilla, and dabs of coffee and something that’s just a smidgen resinous.
Other Impressions: None.

Amber, BPAL, green oudh, ink, inky musk, Lavender, Lilith, Lilith 2017, Lilith's Birthday, Liliths 2017, limited edition, Musk, oudh, sweet amber, white lavender

Scent Name: The Goddess of Mischief

Manufacturer: Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab – Liliths 2017

Scent Description and Notes: “Lilith has a ton of empathy for the God of Mischief. I think many kids identify with Loki because they know what it’s like to be passed over, to be ignored in favor of a shinier relative or friend, and what it feels like to not be as strong or powerful as some of your peers. He may be evil(ish), but he has a sense of humor and a grasp of irony that kids relate to, and that’s worth its weight in Alfheimian gold nuggets.

Thor is great and all, but Loki has /gone through some shit/, and Lilith respects that.

But what are the main reasons why Lilith digs Loki? “He looks like me, and he’s really funny.”

Girl!Loki costume by Chrissy Lynn!

Oil Color: Clear on  my skin.

Bottle Design and Artwork: This is a standard BPAL brown apothecary bottle.  The label wrapped around the bottle features the name of the scent in bold, white letters along the top of the bottle, while the name of the company is at the bottom in smaller white block font.  The name of the collection situated just about the company name and is in a cactus green color. The label art is as follows:

  • ITB:  Oddly enough, it’s a white leather note that I smell first, even though there is none present.  On second sniff, the white lavender is clearer followed by the inky musk and a touch of oudh.  Amber, unfortunately, is missing in this stage.
  • Wet: I think it’s the white lavender that is giving me the leather impression,, even on my skin.  It’s strong, herbal, with just enough softness from the musk and faint oudh to keep it from smelling too medicinal.  As it sits, the amber shyly peaks out, warming the scent ever so gently.
  • Dry: After 11 hours, I’m left with a rather lovely blend of delicious amber,  oudh, and only the impression of something refreshingly herbal.  Definitely a keeper!

Other Impressions: None.

Scent Name: You Fancy Me Mad

Manufacturer: Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab – Halloweenies 2017:  The Tell-Tale Heart

Scent Description and Notes:  “Now this is the point. You fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing. But you should have seen me. You should have seen how wisely I proceeded — with what caution — with what foresight — with what dissimulation I went to work! I was never kinder to the old man than during the whole week before I killed him.

Percolating with derangement: flashing spikes of orange blossom, neroli, lemon, and bitter clove in a bubbling mass of opoponax, patchouli, and thick, black vetiver.”-https://blackphoenixalchemylab.com/shop/limited-edition/weenies-2017/you-fancy-me-mad/

Oil Color: The color of Lemonchello.

Image from https://blackphoenixalchemylab.com/shop/limited-edition/weenies-2017/you-fancy-me-mad/

  • ITI: Lemon essence, strong neroli, orange blossoms are the most dominant notes upon first sniff, but the pleasant patchouli does seems to develop on deeper inhalation.  Thankfully, because that note isn’t too earthy, it doesn’t detract from the bright, citrus scent as a whole.
  • Wet:  The lemon is much more balanced with the neroli and orange blossom. The vetiver lingers gently beneath while the patchouli adds a modicum of pleasant earthiness to the scent. I’m liking it so far, especially as a bright citrus mid-spring scent.
  • Dry: After sitting for half a day, the scent has morphed into a perfume I imagine a mature woman wearing – orange blossom, musky powder, and a hint of neroli.

I took my visitors all over the house. I bade them search — search well. I led them, at length, to his chamber. I showed them his treasures, secure, undisturbed. In the enthusiasm of my confidence, I brought chairs into the room, and desired them here to rest from their fatigues, while I myself, in the wild audacity of my perfect triumph, placed my own seat upon the very spot beneath which reposed the corpse of the victim.

A jubilant and deranged lime absinthe.”-https://blackphoenixalchemylab.com/shop/limited-edition/weenies-2017/the-wild-audacity-of-my-perfect-triumph/

  • ITI: Oh, it smells like lime rind and fizzy champagne.  While I’m not getting absinthe in its entirety, the effervescent nature the note lends to the scent makes me feel like I’m celebrating New Years with the best vodka, lime, and soda water drink possible.
  • Wet:  It stays pretty true to form on my skin – uplifting zesty lime with a hint of fizzy adult beverage.  The darker green notes of the absinthe begin to develop as it settles on my skin, not not enough to take away from the effervescent and fun impression I have when smelling it.
  • Dry: I had to reapply this one after some cooking as the smell had all but dissipated. On second dry-down, The scent reminds me of a perfume-y version of watered down lime essence  with a bit of tonic water underneath.  It’s nice, but it doesn’t last on my skin.

Other Impressions: None.
