Scent Name: This Wan White Humming Hive

Manufacturer: Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab – Halloween 2016: Edith Wharton

Scent Description and Notes: And where should the living feel alive
But here in this wan white humming hive,
As the moon wastes down, and the dawn turns cold,
And one by one they creep back to the fold?
And where should a man hold his mate and say:
“One more, one more, ere we go their way”?
For the year’s on the turn, and it’s All Souls’ night,
When the living can learn by the churchyard light.

White patchouli leaf, beeswax, ambergris, and pale incense. -BPAL.org

Oil Color: An orangecicle colored oil.

Bottle Design and Artwork: This is a standard 5ml BPAL brown apothecary bottle.  The label wrapped around the bottle features the name of the scent in white italic font shadowed in black along the bottom of the bottle, just over the name of the company, which is in an italic block font in a bone color outlined in black.  The label art features what looks like a carved stone skull in relief.

  • ITB: I was originally going to wear this to a concert, but the beeswax note is so thick and bordering on cloying that I had to revise my plans. It almost smells like there’s honey in here. I’m not getting much else, unfortunately.
  • Wet: It’s much the same – honeyed beeswax, but the honey note that smells like urinal cakes on my skin.  I get a very tiny hint of patchouli leaf before it vanishes back behind the heavy top notes.
  • Dry: Thankfully, as it settles (within 10 minutes), the incense notes emerge, tempering the overt sweetness with smoldering frankincense, myrrh, copal, and a hint of patchouli. It stays much the same for most of the evening.  I just wish it was a bit less sweet.

Other Impressions:  None.
