Scent Name: A Deadly Terror That Had Seized Upon All
Manufacturer: Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab – Halloween 2018: Masque of the Red Death
Scent Description and Notes: “It was then, however, that the Prince Prospero, maddening with rage and the shame of his own momentary cowardice, rushed hurriedly through the six chambers, while none followed him on account of a deadly terror that had seized upon all.
He bore aloft a drawn dagger, and had approached, in rapid impetuosity, to within three or four feet of the retreating figure, when the latter, having attained the extremity of the velvet apartment, turned suddenly and confronted his pursuer. There was a sharp cry –and the dagger dropped gleaming upon the sable carpet, upon which, instantly afterwards, fell prostrate in death the Prince Prospero. Then, summoning the wild courage of despair, a throng of the revellers at once threw themselves into the black apartment, and, seizing the mummer, whose tall figure stood erect and motionless within the shadow of the ebony clock, gasped in unutterable horror at finding the grave-cerements and corpse-like mask which they handled with so violent a rudeness, untenanted by any tangible form.
The wild courage of despair: a screech of blood orange and a splash of blood entangled in a corpse-mask of tattered white sandalwood stained with balsam and a grime-crusted winding sheet.” -https://blackphoenixalchemylab.com/shop/in-memoriam/halloween/halloween-2018/masque-of-the-red-death/a-deadly-terror-that-had-seized-upon-all/
Oil Color: A slight yellow oil on my skin.
Bottle Design and Artwork: This is a standard 5ml BPAL brown apothecary bottle. The label wrapped around the bottle features the name of the scent in red block font outlined in white along the bottom of the bottle, just over the name of the company, which is in a smaller version of the same font, but in black instead of red. The label art is as featured:
- ITB: I wasn’t sure how the Lab would convey crime, but this does strike me as a grimy blood orange, caked in blood with an unsettling balsam shocked throughout.
- Wet: An interesting combination of slightly astringent balsam and blood orange with that somewhat gravely grime note. After just a few seconds, the white sandalwood wafts through the balsam, blood orange, and blood, making me think of what a whirlwind of emotions might smell like.
- Dry: After an hour, the scent has shifted toward more of a dry resin tinged with faded blood orange. The dryness comes from the balsam, but it isn’t distinct on its own, only coloring the dominant sandalwood.
Other Impressions: “It’s just straight up grape bubblegum.”-Tony
