Scent Name: In a Whispering Gallery
Manufacturer: Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab – Halloween 2017
Scent Description and Notes: “That whisper takes the voice
Of a Spirit, speaking to me,
Close, but invisible,
And throws me under a spell
At the kindling vision it brings;
And for a moment I rejoice,
And believe in transcendent things
That would make of this muddy earth
A spot for the splendid birth
Of everlasting lives,
Whereto no night arrives;
And this gaunt gray gallery
A tabernacle of worth
On this drab-aired afternoon,
When you can barely see
Across its hazed lacune
If opposite aught there be
Of fleshed humanity
Wherewith I may commune;
Or if the voice so near
Be a soul’s voice floating here.
Marbled white iris, white tobacco flower, Italian bergamot, white leather, and Mysore sandalwood.“ -BPAL.org
Oil Color: Colorless on my skin.
Bottle Design and Artwork: This is a standard 5ml BPAL brown apothecary bottle. The label wrapped around the bottle features the name of the scent in blocky, bolded pumpkin orange letters along the bottom of the bottle, just over the name of the company, which is in a smaller white block font. The name of the collection and year are situated along the top of the label in a smaller version of the same font as the company’s name. The label art features inked artwork of a Victorian woman running from another in fright.
- ITB: That’s interesting. I am getting marbled iris, bergamot, and something that almost reminds me of cocoa and a hint of tobacco flower.
- Wet: I’m still getting the initial impression of coco before the marbled iris hits with a vengeance (on me, buggy). The sandalwood and bergamot swell to tame. No leather to be found, yet. It smells like a lush bath bomb that I can’t place the name of right now.
- Dry: So much better dried – the tobacco flower and sandalwood are light and airy, almost mallow-like next to the bergamot, subdued leather, and much better behaved white iris.
Other Impressions: “I can smell spices, but then it smells soapy. I swear I smell a hint of chocolate in there.” -Kelly
